Discover the 5 essential sailing knots
Knowing the basic sailing knots is essential for anyone who wants to enjoy the sea safely, whether aboard a dinghy, a motorboat, or simply around the marina. At Port Calanova we present the 5 essential sailing knots every sailor should master.
- Bowline: a very safe, strong knot and the most widely used on board. It is used to tie halyards or sheets to the sails, to make fast to a bollard, or to improvise a fixed loop around an object.
- Figure-eight knot: a stopper knot widely used to finish off the end of a line, preventing it from fraying and from slipping through blocks and pulleys.
- Clove hitch: used to secure fenders and to make a line fast to a post or mast as a quick mooring. It is quick and easy to tie, although not among the most secure, as it can slip if not kept under tension.
- Reef knot: a very basic knot used to join two lengths of rope of the same diameter and material at their ends, forming a longer line.
- Slip knot: a running knot that slides easily along the rope, versatile and very useful for retrieving objects lost at sea.
