Check this checklist before you set sail
Here's a checklist of general points to go through before setting sail:
- Check the weather forecast: good weather is essential for an enjoyable sail. If the forecast is poor, or there's a risk of storms or low visibility, postpone your outing to a day with better conditions.
- Life jacket: the foundation of safety on a dinghy.
- Tow line.
- Bailer: used to bail water out of the bottom of the boat.
- Whistle: if something goes wrong, it will help you alert nearby boats and anyone who might hear you from the shore.
- Wetsuit and neoprene boots suited to the season: one of the main features of dinghies is how easily they can capsize, so it's important to stay comfortable enough to manoeuvre quickly and easily. Above all, don't get cold.
- Water on board: make sure you have enough water for the whole trip.
- Sun protection: even more necessary offshore than on the beach, in both winter and summer, since the sea's reflection and the breeze intensify the sun's rays. Avoid sunstroke and sunburn with high-protection sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap.
With this checklist ready, all that's left is to enjoy sailing with complete peace of mind.
