Busting 5 myths about learning windsurfing

Windsurfing has a reputation for being difficult, expensive or reserved for the few. At Port Calanova we debunk 5 common myths about this watersport.

Myth 1: "I'd love to windsurf, but it's hard to learn"

Back when boards were narrow, long, heavy and slippery, that might have been true. Today's modern equipment is shorter, wider and more stable, making it much easier to balance and learn. Know your starting limits and follow your instructor's guidance to progress step by step — don't try to run before you can walk!

Myth 2: "Windsurfing is expensive"

Good equipment is essential to learn and improve at this sport, and the kit itself is costly. If you're not ready to buy your own gear yet because you haven't settled on a sail and board size, Port Calanova offers windsurfing courses and provides all the equipment you need to practise.

Myth 3: "It takes a lot of physical effort to pull the sail out of the water"

A classic myth. If you learn the right technique — lifting the sail with your leg muscles rather than your back — it takes far less effort. How? Crouch on the board and pull slowly while keeping your back straight.

Myth 4: "The best place to windsurf is Tarifa"

Windsurfing can be practised on any coastline with light, moderate or strong breezes. Light breezes are ideal for beginners, as they let you learn the initial manoeuvres. Take your first steps at Port Calanova.

Myth 5: "Windsurfing is only for athletes and young people"

Windsurfing isn't an extreme sport. We're used to seeing videos of athletes performing spectacular tricks, but it's a sport that suits every level. At Port Calanova you can practise it from the age of 8.
